Cylinder Head and Timing Train Information

This web page contains information and illustrations from the Mitsubishi Parts Lookup Program (CAPS), the Mitsubishi 1992-1996 Engine Overhaul Manual, and Dynamic Racing. Specific data for the turbocharged DOHC models are provided in the Remarks column. Generally, the same parts are shared between TT (turbocharged ) and NT (non-turbocharged) heads. However, I have read that the heads themselves are slightly different, especially in the combustion chamber and port areas. The part numbers that are shared between Z16A and Z15A (6G72 DOHC turbo) and Z11A (6G72 DOHC non-turbo) models and parts that are different are indicated at the end of each section.

The tables below present cylinder head flow information collected from the Team3S email list, the 3SI.ORG message board, and from personal communication (special thanks to Paul Prentis at PPE Engineering). A cylinder head is placed on a flow bench and the volume air flow through the heads is measured when there is 28 inches of water (or ~1 psi) pressure drop across the heads. Stock gross valve lift for our engines is a little over 0.350 inches for both intake and exhaust. At 0.300" lift, both TT and NT heads can flow more air, with a 1 psi pressure loss, than the cylinders can handle at 8000 rpm. That is excellent! However, flow bench measurements cannot measure the performance of heads when in actual use. On a running engine, there are dynamic forces from the valves opening and closing, and air supply changes from the turbos. Head "flow work" (the shaping of combustion chambers, runners, and ports), when done properly, can reduce the pressure loss through the heads at various flow levels (or equivalently, flow more air at the same pressure loss), both on the bench and dynamically on the engine.

The top table below is for stock turbocharged-engine heads. The bottom two tables are for a stock non-turbo (normally aspirated) engine head (left table) and the same head after flow work (right table).

Production dates are YYMM.D, where YY is the year, MM is the month, and D is the third of the month (or about 10 days). Model year production begins xx06.1 where xx is the year before the model. For example, 1993 models started production at 9206.1 and ended production at 9305.3. A car's production date is located on a sticker on the "B" pillar facing the end of the driver's door. Measurements in the Remarks column are in millimeters (mm) unless noted otherwise. Left or left hand (LH) is to the rear of the car for the transversely mounted engine. Right or right hand (RH) is to the front of the car for the transversely mounted engine. The front of the engine is to the driver's side of the car. Items within a section are ordered by the Part Name Code (PNC). Please verify actual parts and part numbers with your Mitsubishi or Dodge dealer.
